چکیده

Calls for a ‘systemic turn’ in Responsible Innovation and Research (R(R)I) stem from unease with engagement research. Engagement research structures science-society interactions to align innovation processes societal considerations. As this often focuses on micro practices of actors at discrete events or bounded environments, it tends neglect the systemic nature these processes. We introduce ecosystem concept account complexity, openness, mutual learning responsible governance. governance refers here capacity diverse reflect socio-ethical horizons different streams ecosystem. For systems-level building, we discuss three adaptations Socio-Technical Integration (STIR): STIR workshops curated by agents, multi-stream through brokers, multi-method design addressing networked responsibility. This methodological introduces an perspective R(R)I

Multi-level Governance of Socio-Technical Innovation: the Case of District Heating in the UK

While urban heat networks are established components of energy systems in several European countries, district heating (DH) serves only around 1% of the UK's space and hot water heat demand. Many of the factors relevant to Scandinavian 20 th century development of DH (resource efficiency, affordable heat, regeneration, local revenue generation) inform contemporary UK plans, but climate protecti...

Piloting Socio-Technical Innovation

Anyone familiar with the German IS research culture would expect to find numerous action researchers in Germany. However, a closer examination of the literature reveals there are relatively few if any. There are few publications claiming to report on action research and there is little if any ongoing debate on action research. This paper argues that the lack of publications is a result of a dif...

Responsible research and innovation in information systems

European Journal of Information Systems (2012) 21, 207–211. doi:10.1057/ejis.2012.19; published online 20 March 2012 The field of information systems (IS) is characterised by a plurality of positions and approaches that defy simple definitions or characterisations. One aspect that I believe many, if not most, IS scholars can agree on is that IS research aims to describe and understand the use o...

Algorithmic Self-Governance and the Design of Socio-Technical Systems

The Digital Society is increasingly characterised by an ecosystem of smart, socio-technical applications. Unlike biological ecosystems, each application, and indeed the entire socio-technical ecosystem, is critically dependent on human-centred, mutually agreed, conventional rules for its effective and efficient operation, and inter-operation. This paper is concerned with exploring how to repres...

Putting the technical back into socio-technical systems research

Socio-technical systems (STS) analysis has provided us with a powerful framework with which to analyse the reasons behind the poor acceptability, uptake and performance of many information or communication technology systems (ICT). However, for the contribution of STS thinking to be more than simply a means of critiquing current practices and ICT systems, it needs to also contribute to the proc...
